In the Spotlight – Allantoin

Meet the wonder ingredient that hydrates, promotes anti-aging, and more

When you’ve got an ingredient backed by studies that declare it’s an elixir of life, you know you’ve got something good on your hands. Meet allantoin, the multi-purpose ingredient that soothes and protects the skin.

What is allantoin?

While skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera are known for their moisturizing benefits, allantoin is what we like to call a well-kept ‘secret’. While it is hardly highlighted in reviews of skincare products—likely due to its scientific name—both lab-created and naturally-occurring allantoin (found in plants like comfrey) both provide numerous benefits, versatility, and natural affinity for the skin.

How does allantoin benefit the skin?

1. Hydrate

If you have dry skin or sensitive skin, you’ll want to include allantoin in your skincare—it’s the perfect choice to lock in moisture as it increases the water content of skin cells to deliver supple skin, while being gentle enough to use on easily irritated skin. This prevents your skin from experiencing transepidermal water loss, or moisture from evaporating from the surface of the skin.

2. Skin cell regeneration

If you frequently suffer from dull skin, you’ll be happy to know that allantoin encourages your skin to shed dead skin cells—birthing new ones that brings an instant glow to your face.

3. Anti-aging

The constant natural regeneration of skin cells effectively slow down the signs of aging. As old skin is exfoliated and new skin surfaces, you turn back the clock and look at least a couple of years younger than your actual skin age!

4. Reduction of acne scars

If your skin is rough and blemished with acne scars, allantoin can help reduce imperfections without causing irritation by shedding the outer layer of your skin epidermis. This is especially great for those with sensitive skin that react to acne medication containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

5. Works well with sunscreen

While allantoin on its own does not block out UV rays, it’s included in many sunscreen products to help manage irritation, while moisturizing your skin and encouraging healthy cell development. It also reduces the amount of redness with its hydrating properties—perfect if you’re prone to turning red at the beach.

The best way to use allantoin in skincare

If you have skin that flushes to the touch, and breakouts that you only seem to aggravate with the use of harsh acne solutions, you should definitely give allantoin a try.

Our favorite thing about allantoin is that it can be found in various products from creams to even hair care—proof of how it works wonderfully with other ingredients to bring out the best for your skin. In fact, it’s why we selected allantoin as one of five key ingredients in our Ultra Moisturizing Repair Gel—our lightweight moisturizer carefully formulated to target sensitive skin. Allantoin’s ability to soothe and plump the skin with high levels of moisture perfectly compliments our curated ingredient list of chamomile and cucumber extracts, aloe vera, as well as calendula, in our gel moisturizer. It’s the easy way to prevent stress on your skin without worrying about repercussions. You just can’t beat that kind of assurance.
